Signs You’ve Outgrown DIY Social Media Marketing and What to Do Next
I might be the first social media manager to say this, but not everyone needs social media management. Some people are actually really freaking good at running socials on their own.
But after being in the social media industry for close to a decade, almost everyone needs help from time to time.
The reality is, social media is insanely time-consuming, and I’m assuming you already have a full-time job. So, why take on another one?
Here are the top 5 reasons my clients end up throwing their DIY social media management in the trash and hiring a social media manager.
You’re not very tech-savvy, and social media is making you want to rip your hair out
Some of us live and breathe social media tech. Others? Not so much. Social media marketing for businesses and personal brands isn’t the same as posting for your friends and family.
So, if you don’t like tech, that’s a pretty good reason to hire a social media manager. Because these days, you’re going to need to master a handful of skillsets to really set yourself apart.
- Carousel and post creation on Canva or other creative platforms
- Reel editing within the platform or on Edits and CapCut
- Writing captivating Instagram captions
- Just thinking about the Meta Business Suite is giving me a headache
Can you run socials without these things? Absolutely. But for most of us, some outside help is definitely required. And unfortunately, that requires a tolerance for tech, lol.
You have more important things to do than study social and make posts in Canva all day
I’d say close to 80% of my clients come to me after debating whether to hire a social media manager because they just don’t have the freaking time.
Business owners, especially solopreneurs, are neck deep in tasks, and it’s easy to let social media hit the back burner. Since social media management requires DAILY time, this is one of the best things to outsource if you’re a busy af business owner.
You’ve been posting consistently for quite some time, and you still have low engagement
Still not sure if you need a social media manager? Keep reading. Because, despite what everyone has told you, it doesn’t take 10 years to grow your account.
When you have an airtight social media strategy, post consistently and engage with your audience, growing your account can happen pretty quickly.
Am I saying you’re going to be an overnight success as soon as you hire a social media manager? Maybe. But for most people, no. But you’ll definitely get there a lot quicker than if you were running sh*t solo.
You’re great at running your business, but not so great at creating content
Running a business and creating content are two completely different beasts. It’s easy to assume that since you’re an expert at what you do, you should be the best one to talk about it.
Buuuuuut, that actually might not be true. In my experience, experts can be really bad at creating content. It’s not that your ideas are bad. They’re probably really freaking great. But the way that you package them is likely falling short for your audience.
You see, experts tend to speak… well, like an expert. And your audience can’t relate to that sh*t. Having someone who isn’t a pro at what you do can actually work in your favor because we can tell you exactly when you’re drifting outside the lines of attention.
You aren’t getting consistent leads and would like to be able to make more money
I mean…who doesn’t want to get more leads and make more money?! Yes, there are tons of people running successful businesses without social media. But why not add another revenue stream?
Posting consistently on social media shows potential customers that you’re actively growing your business and gives them a sneak peek into what it would be like to work with you. A win-win if you ask me.

You’ve scaled your business and no longer have time to post, even though you lowkey love doing it
Last but certainly not least, some of you probably really love creating content, but you just don’t have the time anymore. But don’t worry. Just because you hire a social media manager doesn’t mean you don’t get to be part of the creativity.
If you’re a brand that posts talking head videos or other personal content, you’ll still be in charge of driving that boat. We’ll just be the ones editing it.
Another way to offload to a social media manager without fully giving it up is to hire an SMM to handle strategy and content planning, so you can spend your time executing.
How do I know when I should hire a social media manager?
At the end of the day, nobody can tell you when or why you should hire a social media manager. But we’re happy to nudge you in the right direction because we’ve seen just how impactful having an SMM team can be for business owners just like you.
