Why Your Instagram Engagement Sucks (And How to Fix It)

March 12, 2025

Your Instagram engagement is down, likes are nonexistent and your posts feel like they’re screaming into the void. Do you relate? (You don’t have to answer that.)

If you’re wondering, “Why is my Instagram engagement SO low?” or “Why do I have so many followers but no likes on Instagram?” — you’re not even remotely alone.

But here’s the thing: It’s not Instagram’s fault. If I’ve learned anything from working in social media management, it’s that your content, strategy (or lack of one) and how you show up for your following are the real culprits.

Let’s break down your low engagement on Instagram and what to do about it.

‘More Followers = More Engagement’ is a Myth

Too many people still believe that skyrocketing their follower count automatically leads to better engagement. I hate to be one of the bearers of bad news, but that’s just not how it works!

If your audience isn’t captivated by you, those numbers mean nothing. Here’s why:

  • Going Ghost: If you’ve ever bought followers (or just attracted the wrong ones), congrats; you have a bunch of ghost bots or disinterested users inflating your numbers.
  • Wrong Audience: If your content isn’t speaking to the right people, they’re not going to interact. A thousand highly engaged followers beat 10,000 who don’t care — every single time.
  • The Algorithm: Instagram pushes content that gets more engagement. If your followers aren’t engaging, your posts get buried deeply beneath the rest.

Fix it: Stop focusing on vanity metrics. Instead, build a community that actually wants what you’re offering. If you want to know how to build your social media empire, click here.

You’re Posting, But Not Engaging

There’s a huge difference. If you treat Instagram like the friend you send memes to weekly but don’t actually talk to, you need a different strategy. Those friends are the best, though, aren’t they? It’s too bad they’re few and far between, just like being successful on social media with no engagement strategy.

Why it’s Killing Your Engagement:

  • Instagram Rewards Interaction: The more you spend time mindfully engaging with others, the more they engage back. Why?
  • People Like Feeling Seen: Humans are social creatures. We crave collaboration. If your followers comment and you ignore them, why would they keep showing up?
  • Your Content Needs Traction: Comments, shares and saves tell Instagram your post is worth showing to more people. If you’re churning out posts that give zero value to your followers, you’re not going to see your desired results.

Fix It: Reply to every comment — yes, even the basic ones. Then try engaging before you post. Comment on other content in your niche, respond to stories and be an active participant. Also, use interactive features like polls, question stickers and quizzes.

Your Content is Boring and Salesy

Nobody logs onto Instagram excited to see another “We released a new feature…” or “DM me for more info!” post. If your feed is a constant stream of generic sales pitches, it’s no wonder your engagement has keeled over.

As a small business, one of the most important things to remember is most people don’t care about your brand or your rehearsed sales pitch. They care about how you can benefit them — what you have to offer. Remove the mask, cut the fluff and start making authentic content.

Why Being Basic is Hurting You:

  • ‘Salesy’ Brands Can’t Be Trusted: If all you do is push products, you’re not building relationships. You’re actually pushing long-lasting partnerships away.
  • A Dead End: There have been numerous studies that show audiences respond to emotional connection. The best content tells a story, entertains or educates in a personal way.
  • Instagram Favors Diverse Content: If you’re only posting static images with captions that read like ads, you’re missing out.

Fix It: Share behind-the-scenes moments, customer stories, memes and valuable tips. Don’t forget to use storytelling, as well. Show your audience why they should care instead of just telling them to buy. Remember, your audience doesn’t care about your product — they care about how it benefits them.

You’re Ignoring SEO for Social Media

No, SEO is not dead. If you’re just posting and hoping people magically find your content, stop it. Social media is basically a search engine now. Not using SEO? That’s part of why you have no engagement on Instagram.

Why it’s a Problem:

  • Hashtags Aren’t Enough: You need keyword-rich captions, optimized bios and alt text.
  • Search-Driven Content Gets More Visibility: People use Instagram like Google now, so you need to show up in search results.
  • Reels, Stories and Carousels Perform Better: If you’re only posting static images, you’re missing a huge opportunity for growth.

Fix It: The first step in optimizing your social media is using keywords that your audience searches for in your bio and captions. Don’t skip alt text, either. But most importantly, make more appealing content. Avoid fluffy intros, front-load your keywords and post more reels/carousels.
